“I want to say that I took care of my family, that I gave to my family. I very much want every sibling of mine to succeed in everything they pursue”

Trelas Dyson

A CDH diagnosis affects the entire family differently, including the siblings. When Trelas Dyson and his six brothers and sisters learned that their mother was expecting another little brother – Aiden Mathis Dyson – they were over the moon. When they received news of his CDH diagnosis, they banded together and adapted through the hard times, keeping their focus on the tasks set before them and supporting one another as best they could as a unit.

Trelas had always been a dedicated student, but even in that time of crisis, he threw himself into his studies. Motivated by a philanthropic heart, his long-term vision for the future was further motivated by the idea of giving back and helping others, and being able to provide for his family.  ”I want to say that I took care of my family, that I gave to my family. I very much want every sibling of mine to succeed in everything they pursue” he shared in his application. “I also want to put my mother and father in a position to do all that they ever set out to do. I truly do believe the Dyson family will become a brand (no, not the Dyson Vacuum) but that we will be one of the most recognizable families on the globe in the years to come. And I truly believe that Aiden might just be the biggest and most successful of us all.”

What Trelas has accomplished so far gives us little doubt he will meet these goals and set the rest of his family up for success. Trelas graduated 12th in a class of 800 with over a 4.0 GPA, a member of the National Honor Society, Track and Cross Country teams, Student Council, and rose the ranks in ROTC, making it not just to 2nd Lieutenant, but being selected out of 30 students across the nation to participate in the inaugural ROTC Cyber Security Summer Program with Mississippi State University.

His positivity and enthusiasm spread joy around him wherever he goes. ”[Trelas is] a great leader, a positive influence on many individuals he engages with daily,” his school Principal wrote us. “He stands firmly in his desire and beliefs to encourage others and works tirelessly to build a positive environment and a foundation for the youth in our community.”

With that strength of will and determination, we can’t wait to see what Trelas accomplishes next, and how he paves the way for his siblings and empowers other families struggling with a CDH diagnosis.
